How to Choose the Right Executor for Your Estate

Choosing the ideal executor for your estate is a critical decision, especially it is one you will not have much control over once they start managing it!

The specific person you select will be responsible for managing your affairs long after you are gone.

To ensure that all of your wishes are fulfilled, and your assets are distributed as you instructed, here are some things to keep in mind when choosing an executor for your estate.

 Trustworthiness

When it all comes down to it, your trust is the one quality your executor must have. Is this a person who you know will carry out your requests accurately and honestly? Will they handle your assets and personal information with the utmost care?

Choosing someone who you are confident will be dependable and will make your decision all the easier.

Objectivity

When someone is handling personal assets and important information, you want them to remain objective and impartial. Death can be a sensitive subject for some people especially if it involves a loved one.

If your potential executor is a member of your family or someone who is close to you, you need to ask yourself if they will be able to make objective decisions without getting caught up in the emotions of it all.

 Knowledge Of The Law

While an executor does not have to be a legal expert, it doesn’t hurt to know some of the basic facts about estate law. If they’re going to be taking on executor responsibilities, they should familiarize themselves with questions they should know as an executor.

They’ll need to understand how to file tax returns, how probate works, and how to properly follow the terms of the will.

Discuss Your Choice

If you have a specific person in mind as your executor, it is important that you make them aware of that. Discuss with them why you think they’re the right choice. Ask them if they are willing to take on the responsibility. Make sure they understand the commitment involved with the role.
